Lab Safety Report Essay

The lab wellbeing video has given important data to more readily set me up to be sheltered in lab and pass by the Seminole State College Lab convention. I viewed the lab video connect http://flash.seminolestate.edu/vod/science/startingwithsafety/startingwithsafety.html, and learned lab wellbeing. The subjects tended to were dressing suitably, how to deal with synthetic compounds securely, Bunsen burner and dish sets wellbeing, and the crisis hardware accessible in the lab. I believe I have been educated regarding the correct methodology and rules to remain safe and secure my cohorts, instructor and my own wellbeing in the research facility setting. Before entering a lab one ought to consider the guidelines that should be applied. The clothing considered essential are legitimate googles, long jeans, long sleeves (not very free), gems evacuated, gloves (whenever required), and cover (if vital). Likewise an understudy is liable for their conduct and should store individual things, not play around, and never carry food and beverages to the lab. At that point a lab can be led in a protected way with the extra mindfulness gave in the accompanying themes. The principal subject tended to was the manner by which to deal with synthetic compounds securely. When utilizing acids or bases in a lab legitimate eyewear, gloves, and covers ought to be worn if essential. The synthetic compounds ought to be kept from the eyes and skin, and if happen to get in eyes utilize an eye wash or shower right away. When blending synthetics: peruse and rehash names, possibly blend synthetic compounds when advised to by educator and utilize the best possible measured (typically littler) holder. When utilizing corrosive just add corrosive to water, not the converse request. On account of a mishap, report the spill to educator right away. Upon lab tidy up, toss materials in appropriate compartments and don't pour acids down the sink. The subsequent point tended to was Bunsen burner and dish sets wellbeing. The Bunsen burner is hazardous and along these lines safeguard should be taken. The arrangement should begin with the correct association of the gas hose, and when touched off watch out. The burner ought to be killed promptly if the fire goes out, falters or blazes occur, or there is a smell of gas. The Bunsen burner can be utilized with glass measuring utencils for warming synthetic concoctions. However,â the dish sets ought to be checked for splits, and once hot ought to be expelled with utensils or gloves. When utilizing delicate glass tubes, hands ought to be secured with cowhide gloves and grease ought to be utilized with elastic inserter and afterward washed off. On the off chance that a thermometer is required the proper temperature (liquor or mercury-contingent upon temperature run) ought to be utilized and comprehended that no shaking is important. The Bunsen burner is among a portion of the hardware utilized much of the time yet can cause hurt whenever utilized inappropriately. The last theme tended to the crisis strategies and hardware required if mishaps somehow happened to emerge in the research facility. The lab room is outfit with medical aid packs, fire quenchers, fire covers, eye wash stations, crisis concoction showers, and legitimate dismissal compartments. Be that as it may, ideally one won't should be utilized with cautious safeguards and presence of mind. For instance, if a breaker is ablaze basically spread it to contain the fire before a fire douser or clearing is required. The crisis gear is there to guarantee security if there should arise an occurrence of a mishap or crisis and ought to be utilized properly. Taking everything into account, the lab is a risky spot if the best possible worry for security isn't paid attention to. In this manner the video has given the correct rules and conventions needs to work a sheltered lab for all to appreciate.

Amber’s Secret Essay

Golden is a multi year elderly person who has discovered she is feeling wiped out and surprising. She comes to discover that she is pregnant and counsels her primary care physician. Being worried of her understudy status and what her folks may believe are her greatest feelings of dread. The hatchling developing inside her is just about 11 weeks and has her own story from within. Referencing the entirety of the development that has happened and the improvement achievements she has reached, the baby is worried of her own prosperity. The specialist offers Amber the alternatives of premature birth and reception, and afterward the heart beat will be heard. It is muddled what Amber’s decision is at long last. 1. What are the hormonal and physical changes that happened in Amber’s typical menstrual cycle before she got pregnant? Preceding Amber’s pregnancy she experienced a typical ovarian cycle. It is expressed all through her story that she is exceptionally sporadic with her cycle, most ladies don't have ordinary cycles until following a long time since their first cycle (Marieb and Hoehn 2013) . During the ovarian cycle which she experienced to create an egg, hormones are discharged through each phase of connection to manage the cycle. Gonadotropins are discharged by means of the front pituitary organ and luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-animating hormone (FSH) are emitted. These influence the arrival of estrogen which through consistent criticism with the nerve center and pituitary organ, a follicle develops standing by to be treated. During this procedure explosions of various hormones during the ovarian cycle can cause stomach torment known as mittelschmerz, German for â€Å"middle pain† (Marieb and Hoehn 2013). On the off chance that it is notfertilized it proceeds into the menstrual cycle, yet since Amber became pregnant the prepared undeveloped organism embedded itself into the uterine divider. 2. Clearly Amber didn't utilize a conception prevention technique. In the event that she had, what choices did she have and how do the different strategies work. Amber had numerous alternatives of conception prevention. There is just a single deterrent measure with 100% bomb evidence appraisals and this is forbearance. In the event that two consenting people choose to take part in sexual exercises, there are numerous alternatives to forestall pregnancy. Hindrance techniques, for example, female condoms and male condoms are presumably the most financially savvy for anti-conception medication (Women’s Health 2011). The pace of adequacy depends on numerous conditions, regardless of whether the condom is still acceptable in light of the fact that they do have a termination date, on the off chance that they have been harmed, if the right grease is utilized or not. Oil based greases breakdown the materials making harm the condom (WebMD 2013). There is additionally hormonal contraception offered as pills, patches, infusions, and vaginal rings. These are hormone discharging specialists that keep the egg from discharging in the ovaries. Implantation gadgets can be utilized too, however are all the more a perpetual installation for around 2-5 years. Contingent upon the gadget relies upon how it forestalls pregnancy. A few or hormonal, making the bodily fluid coating thicker in the cervix to keep sperm from entering. There is a copper gadget that discharges copper into the uterus and slaughters sperm. Those are both intrauterine gadgets, yet there is another that is embedded under the skin in the arm. It is hormone discharging and keeps sperm from arriving at the egg and furthermore thickens the bodily fluid in the cervix forestalling sperm to enter. There are different choices, yet they incorporate disinfection and are a greater amount of an intrusive medical procedure (Women’s Health 2011). 3. What are the typical phases of improvement in an embryo during the primary weeks after origination? The principal weeks after origination are occupied for the incipient organism. It goes down the fallopian tubes and is quickly isolating mitotically. It inserts into the uterine divider for additional turn of events. The embry experiences gastrulation, which is the framing of three layers that transform into the more noteworthy cosmetics of the embryo through turn of events. A heart, neural cylinder which transforms into the spinal rope, and the yolk sac have framed to the undeveloped organism which later structures the stomach related organs. It turns into a hatchling soon after week 7 (Marieb and Hoehn 2013). 4. What are the hormonal and physical changes going on in Amber during her pregnancy? What is shielding her from discharging as ordinary? Physiological changes happening in Amber’s body are going on in her gastrointestinal, urinary, respiratory and cardiovascular framework. She is feeling wiped out as a result of the expanded hCG, progesterone and estrogen levels. Her story is just until her eleventh seven day stretch of her pregnancy, however she may feel numerous manifestations all through the remainder of her pregnancy in the event that it isn't prematurely ended. Those side effects could be expanded pee on the grounds that the kidneys are discarding fetal metabolic waste just as her own. Blood volume additionally ascends to help suit the fetus’ needs (Marieb and Hoehn 2013). An over creation of the hormone progesterone is made which stops the follicle-animating hormones (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). Those are the hormones required for an egg to be discharged a nd travel down into the uterus for a period cycle. On the off chance that that doesn't happen, there isn't monthly cycle (Marieb and Hoehn 2013) 5. How does a pregnancy test work? At home pregnancy tests can be bought over the counter or a blood test can be performed at the doctor’s office. The two of them check for the human Chorionic Gonadotropin, hCG, hormone that is created during pregnancy. The home pregnancy test utilizes pee, and the doctor’s office tests blood (Women’s Health 2006). 6. How might we represent Amber’s symptoms? It seems like Amber is having indications of morning disorder, swell, and cerebral pain can be clarified by the hatchling developing inside her which is causing an ascent in progesterone and hCG and causing her to feel wiped out. Her cerebral pain could be brought about by the ascent in blood volume which she needs to give enough supplements to herself and the hatchling. The swell could be brought about by the development of her uterus. It grows from the size of a clench hand to filling the whole pelvic cavity by about four months (Marieb and Hoehn 2013). 7. Would we be able to consider the incipient organism a parasite in Amber’s body, if yes why? What forestalls Amber’s body from dismissing the new tissue creating in her body that is hereditarily unique in relation to her tissues? I figure we can consider the incipient organism a parasite in Amber’s body. It is benefiting from her supplement admission and her blood to endure. A parasite does only that, takes care of off the supplements of the host and advantages from it (Tortora, Funke and Case 2013). Presently despite the fact that that the incipient organism profits by the mother’s supplements, I likewise accept that it is useful for the mother too. Individuals multiply to carry on their hereditary code, and despite the fact that that during her pregnancy Amber doesn't have the same number of advantages, I accept the result is valuable of having a youngster. 8. What amount of control does the incipient organism/hatchling have over its own turn of events? The incipient organism has no power over how rapidly it creates. There are just sure occasions in which essential pieces of it are delivered, and on the off chance that anything influences this it would be a teratogen by which the mother had come into contact with. Incubation is during around a multi month term, and it happens in the moms body so it tends to be ensured and supported during this crucial time of advancement before the hatchling is acquainted with the world (Berger2010). 9. How is the sex of the incipient organism decided, and what occurs during the formative procedure when the sex organs at long last become evident? During the ninth seven day stretch of improvement there are two distinctive channel frameworks that change into female and male conceptive organs. The conduits are the mesonephrenic and paramesonephrenic channel. Contingent upon the actuating hormone is the thing that the sexual organs form into. The mesonephric pipe transforms into the male sex organ, and the paramesonephrenic channel transforms into the female sex organ (Sajjad 2010) . The gonads at that point separate into the ovaries or the testicles (Marieb and Hoehn 2013). 10. What is the level of fetal improvement that has happened before the finish of the main trimester? Practically all organs have finished turn of events, however they aren’t completely working yet. In the main trimester the baby went from a zygote, to an undeveloped organism and afterward transformed into an embryo. Inside the main trimester is additionally when the baby doesn't yet have its sexual organs yet, yet the sex is foreordained hereditarily by its chromosomes (Cort and Erickson 2001). 11. What are the guidelines with respect to fetus removal in your state and what are the clinical, strict and political explanations for the enactment? The territory of Colorado is master decision concerning premature birth. It permits any lady beyond 18 a years old get a premature birth, and the individuals who are minors need assent from one parent or have an adjudicator waiver the assent. Medicaid will even cover the fetus removal if the pregnancy was because of assault, it causes the mother mental or worry for her wellbeing, or on the off chance that it is a decisive circumstance. I don't accept the territory of Colorado has a very remarkable strict thinking for it, yet to a greater extent an enormous non-strict association with the high Democratic and Liberal rights activists in the bigger metropolitan territories. I accept that is the political thinking too. The territory of Colorado bigger urban communities have convey a high level of populace, and are Democratic. I accept thi s is the fundamental explanation that Colorado is a master decision state (Pro-Choice Colorado 2013). 12. Is it suitable for the doctor to raise the issue of fetus removal? I don’t think it is fitting for the doctor to raise the issue of fetus removal since it isn't their here and there their very own place individual plan on a patient. The specialist is there to treat the patient, and that point in time he is regarding the mother as a patient and the embryo too. I figure it will be fitting to pause and tune in to the inquiries of the mother to pose to what her alternatives are through her pregnancy. On the off chance that

Links Between Cognition And Language - 1402 Words

There are a number of links between cognition and language that form important links. These links are illustrated well, specifically in terms of spatial organization, fire, hunting and cooperative provisioning, within the context of the Gesher Benot Ya’aqov. Gesher Benot Ya’aqov (GBY) is an archaeological site Dated to approximately 780 kya. It provides evidence to support the notion that early hominids were making fires, and spatially organising their lives in a social manner, deliberately around and based upon hearths. Firstly, spatial organisation entails placing and structuring living and working spaces deliberately and consciously, in a manner that amplifies the functionality of the beings within a specific environment. Archaeologists have mapped this specific site through the use of kernel density. The kernel density of burnt and unburnt microliths illustrate that specific parts or sections of the site were used exclusively for performing specific tasks. For example, we can map and see that according to burnt and unburnt fish bones, that fish were processed at the norther part of the site while they were cooked at the southern part of the site. Through this, we can see deliberate spatial allocations of land to be used for sp ecific tasks. This is very important as it also illustrates important links to language and cognition in the following ways. A certain level of cognitive complexity is required for such manipulation of the environment. Criticism on Green Washing

Question: Discuss about the Criticism on Green Washing. Answer: Introduction: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concern of the company towards the social responsibility. It is more of a movement that promotes companies to be aware of the influence, which are created around the society. In another word, CSR is a business approach, which contributes to sustainable growth by delivering social, economic and environmental profits of all the stakeholders. This broad concept is practiced with several definitions and deals with various topics, such as, corporate governance, environmental effects, health and safety, working conditions and input to economic growth (Schuetze and Chelleri 2015). However, the major purpose of CSR is to change towards sustainability. On the other hand, Green-washing is a concept, which states that the companies try to be more compassionate towards the environment than they actually are. It also includes misleading the consumers about the environmental benefits of a certain product, with the help of ambiguous advertisements and unpr oven claims (Bosun, Teodorescu and Teodorescu 2014). Social Security uses several strategies, which includes the implementation of the business policies without damaging the environment and the economy, while the companys reputation stays as it is and the healthy competition remains in the market. If an organization is seen to be damaging the environment, it is to be seen as a socially irresponsible one, and it would risk the partnership with all the stakeholders. The loyalty between the consumer and the brand entirely depends on the relation between the consumer and the product. The social security strategies make new business policies to come up with new products using the natural resources in a cost-effective way (Blome, Foerstl and Schleper 2016) On the contrary, green washing has several sins. The most common one is the sin of Hidden Trade Off, which says the product is green and is made of recycled plastic or paper. Originally, the product might be harming the environment, but this single feature makes the product accessible in the market. The second most common sin of green washing is the sin of no proof, where the company claims the product to be green, or made from recycled goods, but they do not provide any proof of that. Mostly toilet tissues or the facial tissue companies claim their products to be made from recycled goods without providing any evidence. Another sin of green washing is that, when another company with limited workforce reviews the products. The goods come in a mass volume, maybe with a single feature of CSR, but it gets through only because of the disregard by the third company (Onkila 2015). Another form of sin is, the exact percentage of the recycled products are not mentioned, but stated in a vague manner. The toxicity level might be high during the recycling process, but only some amount of the percentage is declared on the label or sometimes at the back of the product. The other sin is called fibbing, where the company uses false posters or already marketed ones on the product, but the consumers have no clue about it. They are not even aware of the fact that the brand has tricked them and making them use a product, which is harmful to the environment. The other two sins include lesser of two evils and the sin of irrelevance, where in the former one, the company claims to true to the product type, but it distracts the consumer from the bigger harm to the society. Most of the organic cigarette companies do this trick with the customers. The other one includes the environmental declaration that might be truthful but insignificant for the consumers seeking green products. The companies commit these sins very often and the products are very much accessible in the open market (Fla mmer 2013). Conventionally, the Corporate Social Security refers to the responsibility of the company to act fairly and ethically and their consideration of the impacts on the society at a large, but does not include sustainability essentially. Sustainability, on the contrary, is concerned with the preservation of the resources and dealing in a manner that is conductive to long term business. But the underlying arguments of sustainability are often hidden and the corporate houses indulge in the practice, which causes long term harm to the environment (Walker and Wan 2012). The basic truth is, companies do not portray the exact truth about the products to the consumers. They claim to be green but they do not act green at all, because most of the corporate organizations have some amount of evil impact on the environment, depending on the state of the company (McMichael 2012). In the current scenario, Green washing is being used by most of the companies, against their rivals in the market. Most of the corporate houses do not reveal their secret of green washing in the severe competitive market; they try to put eyewash in front of the consumers in order to be labelled as a socially responsible company. If the companies do not keep their green schemes to themselves, they might be accused of being green washed by their rivals without difficulty (Tsagas 2012). However, (Tsagas 2012) stated that in recent times, several companies are going for the green business, and the numbers are rising day by day. When the annual report of any company gets published, they keep a section, which mentions the CSR activities, taken on account. As the socially responsible companies and the green consumptions are increasing, green advertising has increased in last 20 years (Crane, Matten and Spence 2013). The scenario demands a little transparency about the green business from the corporate houses. If there were any doubt about the fact, that whether CSR is a little more than the green washing, it would be a false claim. The corporate houses do not declare their secrets about the CSR activities or the green business openly, as they are very much cautious about their rivals, pointing out the mistakes about the CSR activities. However, transparency and the well establishment within the financial scheme is the key to maintain the CSR activities. Most of the times, companies make mistakes on this account intentionally or maybe unintentionally. If a corporate house is dealing with the green washing, some actions should be taken on the company. Proposal for facilitating change for Gene One

Strategies to be adopted by Gene One Intensive Embrace of Technology In the current technological environment which becomes more and more dynamic, the success of firms depends to a greater degree on the extent to which they embrace the technology. Firms which use new technological developments have been found to report high outputs and quality of the products and services which satisfy the needs of the customers.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Proposal for facilitating change for Gene One specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Gene One seems to be under the leadership of ambitious and talented leaders who have the company’s welfare at heart. This is a right leadership environment, thus the right strategies are required to enhance the achievement of the company’s objective of being market leaders. The changes in lifestyles and consumer needs and preferences call for technological improvement in the produc tion processes. By using high and intensive technology, Gene One could enhance the quality of its products. This strategy is suitable for Gene One considering the nature of the industry they are in and the nature of their products. The Biotech industry requires players to improve their survival through adoption of high technology. This involves embracing the right technology so that changes and advancement in technology do not render production processes outdated. Many firms are known to fail because of implementing the wrong technology which does not stand the test of time (Robbins et al., 2011). This strategy will be greatly enhanced through the research in the technological field. The company should invest in researching on the various technological techniques in the Biotech industry. A strong technological department is thus recommended in this case. The company should be willing to finance the technology department to contribute to the success of this strategy. This will involv e a research on what the market players are adopting and the degree of the pofit achieved. The technology adopted should increase the production of high quality products (Yukl, 2009). This strategy will help Gene One in achieving high customer satisfaction which will lead to customer loyalty. It will thus enhance the expansion of the firm’s customer base and, consequently, boost its market share. Customer loyalty will also lead to repeated purchases, thus increasing the firm’s profitability.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! The firm’s profitability will, therefore, depend on the extent to which the customers prefer to buy its products over those of the other companies. In order for the firm to achieve its objectives within the 36-mon th maximum deadline, it is to ensure that customer satisfaction is attained through their products (Robbins et al., 2010). Technological superiority also helps in enhancing positive company image. A firm which employs constructive technology will attain positive public image. At this stage when Gene One is planning to be the market leader, its reputation will play a major role in achieving this objective. This strategy could be implemented through the use of high technology means of production and using equipments and facilities which are technologically superior. It ccan be also implemented through refurbishing the technological department to ensure competent personnel are in charge of the company’s operations (Yukl, 2009). This strategy will lead to the desired gains since it will improve the quality of the firm’s products and services. The adoption of intensive technological methods also leads to high outputs. This is in line with the firm’s desire to increas e its market share and customer base. This strategy supports the firms desire to be innovative for the success in the process of change and development depends on the extent to which a firm adopts the right technology. Technology has been known to enhance innovation, thus this strategy will lead to the firm being innovative (Robbins et al., 2011). High Quality Human Resource The success or failure of any company depends on the quality of the workforce it employs. A company with high quality human resource is always successful due to high quality output. For Gene One to achieve its objectives, it is proposed to adopt this strategy. The company should employ personnel of highly qualified workers with vast skills and experience in the Biotech industry. This will lead to high quality output and more customer satisfaction. The quality of service offered to customers depends largely on the quality and experience of a company’s staff. By employing high quality human resource, Gene O ne will also improve its public image and reputation. This will have a great impact on the market segment it currently serves and the potential market share (Robbins et al., 2011).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Proposal for facilitating change for Gene One specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This strategy will involve proper recruitment, selection, training and development of employees. It, therefore, means that the company should make its human resource department improve. This strategy could be implemented through support to this department. This will enhance effective and efficient recruitment practices. The company could use drives, talks in educational institutions and online recruitment means. This will help in pooling a wide variety of applicants from which the company can choose the desired talents to be included in its workforce. Proper selection should also be applied by the company which will lead to c hoosing the right employees. The selection criteria should be multidimensional, and the selected candidates should have a wide variety of talents which will contribute to the firm’s success (Yukl, 2009). Gene One should train its staff in a manner that enhances competitiveness in the market. Proper training is known to instill into workers the right company’s culture, thus enabling consistency in achieving the aims and objectives by every staff member. This also ensures that the firm has the employees with the right skills available in the market, which contribute to its reputation through their quality work. The company should also organize workshops and talks for its human resources to enable exchange of ideas and employee development. This should be done irrespective of employees’ departments to improve interdepartmental harmony and work relations (Yukl, 2009). This strategy of employing high quality human resources will lead to the desired outcomes since it will aim at improving the quality of output. The quality of output, as stated above, greatly depends on the quality of staff employed. High quality human resources also lead to high customer satisfaction. This could result in the desired outcomes since it increases customer loyalty leading to repeated purchases and, therefore, enhancing the profitability of the firm. This strategy also meets Gene One’s desire to be innovative since high quality personnel bring about new fresh ideas. The staff will also determine the creativity, thus meeting the firm’s desire to be innovative. Conclusion The above two strategies will allow Gene One to become more innovative and thus help in achieving its objectives which include market leadership. High quality of human resource and intensive embrace of the right technology will enable the company to implement the desired changes within its operations and products, thus achieving growth and development. This will also strategically posit ion the firm in the industry enhancing its competitiveness. References Robbins, S.P, Judge, T. A. Campbell, T. T. (2010). Memorable Quotes of Leo Tolstoy Quotes Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy is one of the most famous writers in world literature. He penned many famous and lengthy tales such as War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Here are a few quotes from his personal and professional works. At the approach of danger there are always two voices that speak with equal force in the heart of man: one very reasonably tells the man to consider the nature of the danger and the means of avoiding it; the other even more reasonable says that it is too painful and harassing to think of the danger, since it is not a mans power to provide for everything and escape from the general march of events; and that it is, therefore, better to turn aside from the painful subject till it has come, and to think of what is pleasant. In solitude a man generally yields to the first voice; in society to the second.- Leo Tolstoy, War and PeaceBoredom: the desire for desires.- Leo TolstoyEven in the valley of the shadow of death, two and two do not make six.- Leo TolstoyEveryone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.- Leo TolstoyFaith is the sense of life, that sense by virtue of which man does not destroy himself, but continues to live on. But counterfeit art, like a prostitute, must always be decked out. The cause of  production  of real art is the artists inner need to express a feeling that has accumulated, just as for a mother the cause of sexual conception is love. The cause of counterfeit art, as of prostitution, is gain. The conse quence of true art is the introduction of a new feeling into the intercourse of life, as the consequence of a wifes love is the birth of a new man into life. The consequences of counterfeit art are the perversion of man,  pleasure  which never satisfies, and the weakening of mans spiritual strength.-  Leo Tolstoy,  What is Art? Seize the moments of happiness, love and be loved! That is the only reality in the world, all else is folly.-  Leo Tolstoy,  War  and PeaceThe changes in our life must come from the impossibility to live otherwise than according to the demands of our conscience not from our mental resolution to try a new form of life.-  Leo TolstoyThe chief difference between words and deeds is that words are always intended for men for their approbation, but deeds can be done only for God.-  Leo TolstoyThe greater the state, the more wrong and cruel its patriotism, and the greater is the sum of suffering upon which its power is founded.-  Leo TolstoyThe law condemns and punishes only actions within certain definite and narrow limits; it thereby justifies, in a way, all similar actions that lie outside those limits.-  Leo TolstoyThe sole meaning of life is to serve humanity.-  Leo TolstoyThe strongest of all warriors are these two Time and Patience.-  Leo Tolstoy,  War  and Pea ceThe two most powerful warriors are patience and time.-  Leo Tolstoy There is no greatness where there is no simplicity,  goodness  and truth.-  Leo TolstoyTo say that a work of art is good, but incomprehensible to the majority of men, is the same as saying of some kind of food that it is very good but that most people cant eat it.-  Leo TolstoyTrue life is lived when tiny changes occur.-  Leo TolstoyTruth, like gold, is to be obtained not by its growth, but by washing away from it all that is not gold.-  Leo TolstoyWar is so unjust and ugly that all who wage it must try to stifle the voice of conscience within themselves.-  Leo TolstoyWar, on the other hand,  is such a terrible thing, that no man, especially a Christian man, has the right to assume the responsibility of starting it.-  Leo TolstoyWe lost because we told ourselves we lost.-  Leo Tolstoy,  War  and PeaceWe must not only cease our present desire for the growth of the state, but we must desire its decrease,  its  weakening.- Leo TolstoyWithout knowing what I am and why I am here, life is impossible.-  Leo Tolstoy,  Anna Karenina

Global Warming Effects on Population Literature review

Global Warming Effects on Population - Literature review Example DeWeerdt gives a interesting international, almost post-colonial study of the effects of global warming. She divides her analysis into three distinct categories of areas that will impact human life the most signifincantly that are also the most vulnerable to climate change: Food, Disease and changes in sea level. It is somewhat superficially obvious that all of these things will be impacted by climate; sea levels will obviously rise as polar ice melts (DeWeerdt 2012), food production, which is obviously very climate dependent will have to shift, and disease will obviously increase with any serious shifts in population, as these often lead to unsanitary conditions. Her analysis is novel, however, in indicating the degree to which these changes will impact different parts of the world. DeWeerdt argues that development, which is usually meant in economic ways, can actually be considered a society’s degree of ability to adapt to climate changes (DeWeerdt, 2012). Places that have hi gh degrees of infrastructure, for instance, will be more able to cope with any of these changes. Firstly, they can establish things that directly mitigate the effects of climate: things like greenhouses to cope with cold weather or irrigation to cope with dryness. Secondly, they can use transportation infrastructure to cope with secondary effects of climate change as well, easily developing newly productive areas while abandoning areas that have become unproductive due to climate change. Undeveloped countries, however, will suffer more greatly: people cannot flee a newly formed desert, cannot build seawalls to hold back a rising tide, and so forth. Conceptualizing development as a society’s degree of ability to cope with climate allows one to see very clearly that the effects of climate change will disproportionately affect developing societies.Using DeWeerdt’s analysis indicates that one can actually conceptualize as climate change (including both its causes and effec ts) as a particular damaging form of pseudocolonial resource extraction. If one imagines a favorable climate as a resource, in that it provides a whole sleuth of production but can be depleted if not properly managed, then developed countries, which achieve their development largely through the highest use of fossil fuels (DeWeerdt 2012) are actually taking a valuable resource from developing countries every time they use fossil fuels. This is an especially damaging form of resource consumption because the people who get the resource depleted do not gain from the depletion, unlike mining, for instance, in which minerals can be sold. Climate can more be imagined as a river dammed outside of a country’s borders: they lose, and do not gain, while the other country gains but does not loose.

Gene cloning (Clone human gene from cDNA libraries...) Essay

Gene cloning (Clone human gene from cDNA libraries...) - Essay Example First, cloning is the separation or isolation of genetically homogenous strain of an organism (Lassen et al., 2005). Organisms at the same genetic level are identical within a clone. In most cases, bacteria, phages and even higher plants are cloned by the isolation of a single cell from the organism of interest and allowing the isolated cell to form a colony or an entire plant. In more specific terms, cDNA cloning entails the isolation of single but self-replicating organism followed by an amplification of its cell (Kfoury, 2007). However, there are certain conditions that should be met for such a technique to be treated as cDNA cloning. That is, such an organism’s DNA must contain the target cDNA. In cases where the interest of a researcher is in any cDNA produced by a given organism, it would not matter the type of cDNA produced. That is, any cDNA would work. The key and most difficult issue in many cloning studies on CDNA is never the isolation of CDNA but the selection of the CDNA of interest among many cDNAs. A DNA library on the other hand refers to a collection of various sequences of DNA combined into one vector (Kfoury, 2007). Thus, a CDNA library has sequences that are complementary to messenger RNAs. A vector refers to an organism that is designed for experimental purposes and self-replicates. In many experiments, vectors are made from bacteriophages, plasmids, retroviruses and animal viruses (Lassen et al., 2005). Vectors must have a system by which they reproduce, which is the essence genetic science. Before delving deep into the techniques used to clone from CDNA libraries, it is importance to overview a few cloning strategies. Cloning Strategies and Methods First among the recommended cloning strategies is the necessity of acquiring a library that contains the required sequence. Second, the clones of interest should be isolated. Third, formal tests to help ensure that the correct clones of interest have been isolated need to be developed. One method of creating human genes from CDNA is referred to as the Rapid Amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) (McLaren, 2000). The known strengths of RACE are that it is inexpensive and a powerful tool for acquiring full-range CDNA, even for partially known sequences. In this technique, which begins with a mixture of mRNAs, non-specification anchors and gene-specific primers generated from the known regions of the gene, it is possible to identify substitute transcripts of a gene for partial as well as complete sequence of only one known transcript (McLaren, 2000). This technique is used to obtain a full-range sequence of a cell’s RNA transcript. In the first step of the RACE process, reverse transcription in which an unknown end section of a transcript is copied by use of a known sequence from the middle of the transcript results in a CDNA copy of the RNA transcript. The copied region is bounded by the known sequence and either the 5' or 3' end. Screening of cDNA Libraries and D NA Synthesis of CDNA Inserts The other techniques by which human genes may be obtained from CDNA are screening of CDNA libraries and DNA synthesis of CDNA inserts. Screening of cDNA libraries, by transcript-specific RT-PCR cloning is particularly appropriate in situations where a labeled CDNA probe is not available. In this technique, it is the knowledge about a CDNA’

The Boston Photographs Essay Example for Free

The Boston Photographs Essay The Boston Photographs Stanley Foreman, a journalist for the Boston Herald American, captured three famous photographs of a fire rescue case which reminded me of my grandmothers tragedy, displayed the themes of tragedy and anger, parallels to the movie World Trade Center, and aligns with my opinion that Foreman published the photographs rightfully. Foreman snapped the camera thinking to take heroic shots of a brave fireman successfully rescuing a woman and a child. Little did he know, he would capture the collapse of final hope as a woman fell into the gateway to death. A fire immersed a Boston building in the 1930s. A fireman desperately attempted to save a woman and a child from the inferno, and almost came to success. However, the fire escape the three stood upon crumbled from the arm of the building just before the fireman could hoist them onto the ladder of the firetruck. The fireman managed to jump to safety onto the ladder as the ledge broke. Unfortunately, the woman could not cling tightly enough to the fireman, therefore, her and the child dropped stories high onto the solid ground. The woman died immediately from impact, but the child fell onto the cushion of her corpse and managed to survive. The treacherous scene showed on three photographs and became published in over four hundred newspapers across America. Understandably, this raised controversy as the public fired back with complaints of the gory pictures. Some argued that it contributed in, â€Å"Invading the privacy of death,† while others said it took responsibility in â€Å"Assigning the agony of a human being in terror of imminent death to the status of a side-show act† (Ephron, 658). Ephron states her opinion in this essay saying, â€Å"Death happens to be one of lifes main events. And it is irresponsible—and more than that, inaccurate—for newspapers to fail to show it † (Ephron, 662). This essay brought me back to my youth with replaying images of what I imagined the scene of my grandmothers death to look like. Honestly, it fell nothing short of a horror story, especially through the eyes of a muddled, vernal nine year old. I will not go in detail regarding the exact scene, for I find it inappropriately morbid, but I feel willingly to introduce a small, surfaced outline. A fire swallowed her house, eating from the core and dispersing to the edges like a rotting apple. She lay in mid afternoon nap when awakened from the smoky air, but the fire had managed to block almost every exit. She made her way to the only door not already inflamed, but it she could not get it open. The story does not end here, but this sums up all I feel the need to tell. The casket remained closed at the funeral, so I never saw her body again. She rested at age fifty-seven, too young to leave, and too beautiful to have her body disintegrated into ashes. Why did it have to happen like that? Nine years old and having to trust in God for strength proves a hard and strange thing to do, but a life lesson some never learn, and one I would need for the journey on. Ephron wrote this essay to bring forth the readers inner emotions as well as to show the emotion felt by the characters in the story. The themes of tragedy and anger serve as two of the major themes of the essay. The bravery and hope shown to us at the beginning of the story help accent these themes. The author gives us these points to push a sense of reality into the readers, and to present a real event as well as its repercussions. Bravery showed from the fireman who risked his live to save these people. Hope came from the woman and child trapped inside fighting with optimistic longing to make it through. Tragedy and devastation overcame as the story twisted from what looked a promising victory to a deadly reality. The pictures then became published and taken offensively by readers bringing on a strong feeling of anger. The subject of reality also carries through in this essay. It pictures as quite melancholy, and therefore brings its readers to awareness of a true story with thoughts and opinions of witnesses of the scene and readers of the numerous articles of the event. This event has parallels to the events of September 11, 2001, which has been demonstrated to us through the movie World Trade Center. The movie begins by showing the attacks of the buildings and the violence it brought to those inside. It focuses in on the firemen risking their lives to save the victims, however, as the second building crashes upon them, they become  victims themselves. The firemen demonstrate the similarities of bravery and hope to make it out of the fallen building alive, and the movie as a whole brings its viewers to the tragic reality, just as The Boston Photographs does. Personally, I felt moved by the twisted feelings and solid impact of the essay. It made me have to stop to process my thoughts, because I could not believe what I read. It hit me hard with horror and disbelief. I like essays like this that bring us to a since of reality, for I feel as if they are hardly told. Most stories today become glamorized by positive attributes as dark grueling details are masked away leaving us with what our minds desire to believe instead of the harsh truth. Joy and promise turn to need and tribulation instantaneously in reality, which this essay highlights. The catastrophic story of the photographs taken of the sudden death of a woman hit me hard with a flashback of my grandmothers death and also showed the predicament of the firefighters in World Trade Center, as both of these brought the themes of tragedy and anger to the story and farther pushed my opinion that the pictures became rightly publicized. The essay exhibits sensibility and brings the readers to actuality, therefore, I feel it may stand out to readers over other essays. Real stories like this have the ability to teach us something valuable and hit our life experiences bringing a strong impact of emotion to our thoughts, which is why I feel the pictures should have been publicized. Although it displayed a horrific accident, the scene rightfully deserved telling.

INTRODUCTION In an electronic commerce environment, trust is difficult relation to build and even more critical for business success than in traditional commerce. The electronic commerce is not an ordinary business environment where we can trust the vendors. In order for electronic business to prosper, consumers must not be concerned that they will be manipulated, have their credit card numbers stolen, or receive poor quality goods or service. In response to the electronic business needs created by electronic transactions and with the increasing need for third-party assurance to guarantee the trustworthiness of the whole transaction, web seal assurance services have emerged. These web trust assurance services were developed to reduce consumers' concerns. To help consumers determine whether the website is secure, and decide to do online shopping, the AICPA (American Institute of Certified Public Accountants) and the CICA (Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants) have jointly developed the Web Trust Seal to help business entities in maintaining an effective privacy program that addresses their privacy risks and business opportunities.. The seal allows consumers to make purchases online with certainty that vendors have met high standards of business practices disclosure, transaction integrity, and information protection. This paper will focus on defining what the AICPA Web Trust Seal, its development background, what the principles are for obtaining the seal, who is responsible for issuing it, its process, cost, and finally the advantages and disadvantages of obtaining the Web Trust Seal. WEB SEAL DEFINED Web Trust is an international electronic commerce seal of approval designed to improve the confidence and security of co... ...ng doing business online. For those firms seeking the highest standards of assurance, the web seal provided by the AICPA is the most appreciated but also the most expensive among the other seals offered as it is evaluated based on the AICPA attestation standard basis. The web seal is considered to improve the customers' perceptions about the online shopping but business firms need to make sure that their customers are well- educated about the seal. The web seal service has several advantages such as ensuring the vendor's credibility, increasing the trustworthiness of the website, improving the company's internal controls, moreover, web seal assurance may lead to higher sales and better brand recognition. On the other side, it is an expensive service, and requires customers to be well informed about it in order for the mentioned advantages to be fulfilled.

Education and Its Affects Around the World Essay

Education is something that affects all of us as a whole gender, race, and poverty plays a role in education. As a citizen of the United States of America it is important for us to appreciate a good education that some of us take for granite. Gender is crucial in how people view education in the text:† Philippine Women’s College corrects gender miseducation†. Professors and education enthusiast are breaking down the barriers and bias that is associated with gender. Text books in the Philippines show women playing the â€Å"stay at home† role and the father portraying the â€Å" bread winner† role this a form a of bias. Scholars at the Miriam College are working to correct this matter by teaching all female students about stereotypes relating to gender. Students often are shown at a young age to approach matters in a biased free manner, through this approach both male and female can share duties in the household that were once delegated to one based on gender. Trained teachers are able to spot the gender difference and compensate with materials that are fair for all. Miriam College and its faculty also discuss sexual harassment and a list of other things as well. What was happening in the†Women’s Movement â€Å"and what was being taught in the classroom were two totally different things. In 1986 Corazon Aquino became the first female president of the Philippines this was in stark contrast of what was being taught. As far as equality for women the Philippines are ranked ninth in the world, with that being said advocates of gender feel that it is best suited to teach and educate when the students are young. Patricia Licuanan president of Miriam College implemented in 2001 gender courses to the curriculum that focuses on equality and quality education for women. Also in 2001 several colleges in the Philippines have shown interest in providing studies for women as well. Due to the work that has been taken place in the Philippines young women are questioning and taking up professions that were once generally associated with men. In the text â€Å"Lost Generation Fears as boys reject education† Professor Reynolds of Plymouth University states that: â€Å"the gender gap is a worldwide phenomenon, not just in the UK or a Welsh one†. Research has shown that boys are neglecting school, while girls are less likely to drop out of school after 16. A survey showed more girls than boys seek a higher education. Studies also show that vocational programs also play a role in why boys choose not to seek college versus girls. Boys are also not performing on the same level as girls this factor leads to fewer boys in college. Poverty is a component to lack of education as well in the article:† Escaping Poverty is possible when there are local opportunities for people with initiative†. This article shows the stereotypes that are associated with poverty 60,000 people that spread over 15 countries worldwide were surveyed; there are a lot of hurdles we must overcome for this to work. People are likely to fall into poverty the study will take preventive measures to ensure people will not make these mistakes. The stereotypes that haunt poverty stricken places is that people are lazy, shiftless, and have no ambition this is not the case. In fact these people surveyed accept responsibility for there actions, and want to better themselves. All of us need local opportunities and social networks to ensure that this will not happen on a global front, even if someone works hard to get there selves out of poverty with out help from the community and economic woes this process will be pains taking to say the least. Education is factor when combating poverty, we as Americans need to take advantage of our educational system though it may not be the best we are still a free country and should utilize any and every opportunity we have. Race also plays a vital role in education the text:† Officials try to improve black males’ academic performance: The achievement† Ginger Littleton has been a teacher in Northern California for more that twenty years. She has been stumped by the numbers of black males that scored drastically lower than other races in test of achievement. A look at last years test results from grades 1-10 math scores and FCAT were sorted by race. The results showed that 89 percent of white third graders were a the appropriate level, while Hispanics represented 66 percent, and blacks 69 percent but only one out of that percentile was a male. 59 percent of Anglos, compared to 33 percent of Hispanics were at the appropriate level. African Americans represent only 30 percent. This trend increased more by there sophomore year, Caucasians represent 38 percent, Hispanics 32 percent, and 13 percent of African Americans sustained this level of reading. By this point many African Americans have stopped going to school by then. The FCAT test of reading shows that only 1 percent of males were reading at the 10th grade level, white males scored 7 percent on the same level. African American males results were 0 percent, white males were 8 to 7 percent at levels 4 and 5 of reading. A study was conducted in 2004-2005† Focus on Blacks† by The National Education Association labeled the poor standings as â€Å"the achievement gap† and a national crisis. The study showed that African American 17 year old students performed in comparison to 13 year old whites in science. In the math part of the study blacks scored 61 percent below the standards, versus 20 percent of whites in the 4th grade. The results show that African Americans face challenges before they start school. Some of the findings show that it is less father figures and mentors in the African American community, lack of after school programs, and cohesiveness in the family all plays roles in the significant decline in education in the black community. There is a saying† it takes a village to raise a child† the African American community needs to rebuild it village from the foundation up to eliminate this disparity that runs rampant among so many. As you can have just read there are several factors in ones education it may be a gender problem, a socioeconomic problem, or ones ethnicity may all play a role in the type of education we receive as well as our chances of making it in today’s society. We still live in one of the greatest countries in the world in the end it is up to us to utilize what avenues are available and make the most out of it.
